iPhone India debut likely in August

7ff19e01-c786-4132-80e4-506fbb683535HiRes Even as a big frenzy has built up for Apple's second-generation iPhone 3G across 22 countries, buyers in India are unlikely to be able to lay their hands upon iPhone before August end.

And that is not all. While the 8GB model is to be priced at $199 in the US, the same could carry a tag close to Rs 14,000 to 15,000 in India, according to sources. While the iconic cell phone goes on sale from Friday in most nations, India will at best see a soft launch of the two 8GB and 16GB models.

Vodafone will be the first operator to launch iPhone in India, followed by Bharti Airtel. A soft launch would mean displaying, booking and seeding of a limited number of handsets and announcement of pricing and availability schedule.

As iPhone Version 2.0 readies for rollout, fans across Tokyo to Sydney are queuing up in front of Apple stores to be among the first to acquire the coveted new cell phone.

The long-anticipated 3G iPhone that has faster Web links than the predecessor and supports third-party applications like games and email will debut in 22 countries on Friday. Courtesy time advantage, New Zealanders will be the first to buy 3G iPhone which will be launched at 12:01 am Friday.

"I'm really just doing it to be able to say that I'm the first one in the world with one of these phones," 22-year-old student Jonny Gladwell told the New Zealand Herald.

He said he was in the queue because his friends had bet him he could not last the distance. If he lasts, they will buy him the phone. In the meantime they are bringing him meals and holding his place in the queue when he needs a toilet break.

The device is expected to go on sale in 70 countries by the end of the year.

364iphone Apple CEO Steve Jobs surprised everyone when he announced the new 3G iPhone pricing. The 3G iPhone will sell for $199 for the 8GB version and $299 for the 16GB version -- half the current entry-level price.

After launching its first iPhone through exclusive deals with carriers that tied consumers into expensive contracts, Apple is targeting a far bigger market with the 3G iPhone. This time around, Apple is allowing carriers to subsidise the iPhone, with the result that iPhone will no longer be available at a fixed price point in any geography.

However according to analysts, most service providers will either be giving iPhone away or charging a nominal fee as long as customers sign up for service deals.

In some countries, the launch will be accompanied by new promotion policies determined by the service operators who will launch these phones. Canceling a plan is also likely to cost, depending on the plan and the length of the time the phone has been held.

Iphone In the US, Apple and AT&T are expecting to witness a second round of iPhone mania, with indications that buyers have already started queuing up at Apple's Fifth Avenue store in New York. In New Zealand, the consumer frenzy over iPhone launch crashed Vodafone's website on July 8.

In UK, Carrier O2 reportedly said that its website had been unable to cope with demand, which peaked at 13,000 per second. It later said it has sold out.

In Hong Kong, Hutchison Telecom International was flooded by 60,000 online applications over the weekend from consumers who are hoping to grab one of just 500 phones on sale.

In Japan, one of the world's most advanced mobile markets, about 20 people are lining up outside Softbank Corp flagship store in Tokyo since Wednesday morning, with a sign at the top of the queue reading "We Love iPhone."

Softbank, Japan's third-biggest mobile carrier will start selling iPhones at the flagship store at 7 am on Friday and expand sales nationwide at noon.

Japan's 108 million mobile users already frequently use Web browsing and email on 3G networks, and some analysts say that the iPhone might not attract many buyers among mainstream cellphone users

South Korean phone makers Samsung and LG enjoyed a stellar start to 2008 but the launch of Apple's much-hyped new iPhone is set to dent their sales and profit margins later this year.

A strong portfolio of phones helped LG Electronics' sales grow at almost four times the annual industry average in the first quarter, while Samsung Electronics expanded at twice the rate, data from Strategy Analytics showed. But the Korean companies could hit a speed bump in the coming months as the progressive global rollout of Apple Inc's third-generation (3G) iPhone shaves a few percentage points off their profit margins and crimps sales of their top models, analysts said.

And it is not only the Korean giants who are likely to face iPhone challenge, but all smartphone manufacturers across segments. Rivals Motorola and Sony Ericsson are also expected to face a tough time against the next-generation iPhone.

Samsung has four sleek touchscreen phones -- Omnia, Haptic, F490 and Instinct -- lined up to take on Apple. LG offers three touchscreen models -- Prada, Viewty with a five-megapixel camera, and Voyager.

iphone The 3G iPhone is set to further entrench Apple's position in the highly-competitive cellphone market. According to a recent Gartner study, the Apple iPhone rose to No 3 position globally in the smartphone category in terms of market share, selling over 1.7 million handsets in nine months. CEO Jobs aims to sell 10 million iPhones by the end of the year.
In fact, Jobs keynote address at MacWorld in January 2007 woke up the cellphone manufacturers to a new opponent and since then the cell phone manufacturers have been on their toes to develop a formidable iPhone rival.
